Fashion Sense

by Holly Day

I went out and bought myself one of those cool black trenchcoats like
The ones I always see on TV my husband told me I looked
Like his grandmother because she wore one just like it in the ‘70s
But my son told me I looked like a superhero so he’s the one I’m going to listen to

I used to know a world past watching the clock and
Timing when the baby’s supposed to go to sleep, when such and such TV program came on
When my husband’s coming home from work. I used to know what to do
With a day and instead I mark the TV guide so I know
When such and such a program comes on I time
How long it takes to clean the kitchen and load the dishwasher and vacuum the living room so I can
Count on having the house immaculate when my husband steps through the front door

Days used to stretch and stretch and I could feel
The wings growing from the spot between my shoulder blades
Any day I was going to step out the front door and take off flying
And my feet would never touch the ground again.
