Unsolicited
by Mercedes M. Yardley
the phone rang
a number i didn’t know
i thought
is it you?
are you back?
i was
too nervous to answer it
i was
smoothing my hair
trying to breathe
beep!
said the machine
and
silence
it’s you! it’s you!
i waited the proper amount
of time
practicing
“i forgive you”
“i forgive you”
and call back.
“do you need a dentist?”
they ask me.
“i…forgive you”
i whisper.
“what?” they say.
